About
Two Men, One Passion!
Because anchoring is an act closely tied to safety, it is important enough to directly affect how much you enjoy your time at sea. For safe and comfortable anchoring, it is not enough to know how to drop the anchor correctly; choosing the right equipment is equally essential.
For decades, boat owners tried older-generation anchors that relied on chain assistance, such as plough, Bruce, and Admiralty types, hoping to sleep comfortably at anchor. Over time, however, unpleasant dragging incidents and difficulties in getting the anchor to set made it clear that these designs caused serious problems and were inadequate for what is arguably the most important piece of equipment on a boat.
In response, anchor manufacturers did not stand still and introduced some new-generation anchors that no longer depended on chain assistance in the same way. While many believed these newer anchors solved most of the shortcomings of the old designs, architect and highly experienced sailor Atila Rezak, who was also instrumental in having the flat-rope-and-reel system first known as Quickline and later as Ultraline manufactured by Boyut Makina, believed otherwise based on his own experience. He thought that the new-generation anchors on the market still had weaknesses and that, considering how important anchoring is, there was still room for a much better anchor. After seeing the success of Quickline, he told Nejat Ovutmen that he believed Boyut Makina was capable of building it. That was in 2002.
Nejat Ovutmen, himself a boat owner who had spent many sleepless nights because he could not fully trust his anchor and who was also a naval architect, found the proposal intriguing and shared it with his partner, mechanical engineer Yilmaz Yucel. When Yucel also responded positively, they began the project.
The work started with a detailed study of the strengths and weaknesses of both old- and new-generation anchors. It continued through the design and manufacture of numerous test models, trials in environments created at the factory to simulate seabed conditions, and the installation of prototype anchors on boats for real-life sea testing. After passing through these demanding stages over more than three years of work, a shining new anchor arrived on the marine market in 2004. The ULTRA Anchor quickly earned a reputation for outstanding holding power and striking stainless steel beauty.
As the ULTRA Anchor's name spread, the German sailing magazine Segeln included it in its 2006 anchor test alongside other anchors on the market. The ULTRA Anchor not only received five stars for its excellent holding performance, but was also praised as "very good in every respect, worthy of winning any product design competition." A similar test conducted in Croatia went even further, stating, "Our highest rating is 5 stars, but 5 stars is not enough for the ULTRA Anchor, we give it 6." The ULTRA Anchor received the top rating in every test it entered.
Since then, the number of users sharing their satisfaction with the ULTRA Anchor across many websites has continued to grow. ULTRA has also continued to influence boat builders. Undisputedly the best-looking anchor on the market, ULTRA is not just a beautiful product, but one that performs even better than it looks.

The story behind the technically most advanced anchor the world has seen is every bit as interesting as the success of this flawless piece of engineering.
While many of the world's best-known anchors have emerged from famous seafaring nations, the ULTRA Anchor was designed and manufactured in Istanbul by a little-known Turkish engineering company. Perhaps even more importantly, it was the engineering skill and sailing passion of two men that brought this remarkably high-performing anchor to where it is today.
Following this development, Boyut Makina Sanayi owners and deeply committed sailors Nejat Ovutmen and Yilmaz Yucel decided to add marine equipment manufacturing to their field of activity. In line with the idea of always making the very best piece of marine equipment possible, they first embraced the Boyut Marine concept, then Ultra Marine in 2012, and finally the Ultra Products concept in 2025.
Ovutmen and Yucel, the founders of Boyut Makina Sanayi, have been very close friends since their years at Istanbul Technical University. Yucel is a mechanical engineer and Ovutmen a naval architect. After university their paths separated briefly, and both began working as engineers at different companies.
In 1976, after leaving the company where he had been employed, Nejat Ovutmen founded MMS Limited Company together with his older brother, architect Nevzat Ovutmen, architect Ersin Ersoy, and senior mechanical engineer Hasan Hasan. At the beginning of 1977, Yilmaz Yucel left his job and started a 16-month military service.
By 1978, when one of the other partners wished to transfer his share, Nejat Ovutmen proposed that Yilmaz Yucel, whose military service was about to end, join the company as a partner and work together. Yucel accepted the proposal and, as soon as he was discharged, the two began working together in August 1978. Later, Nejat Ovutmen also completed his own short military service, entrusting the company to Yilmaz Yucel during that time.
After nearly ten demanding years of engineering and contracting work that gave them valuable business experience through their first company, MMS Muhendislik ve Metal Sanayi Ltd. Sti., they founded Boyut Makina in 1987 in order to move into the stainless steel sector. They continued their activities together through this company and still do so today.
During its first few years, Boyut Makina focused on plasma cutting of stainless steel sheets. In 1991, the company accepted an offer to manufacture stainless steel accessories for leather drums produced by the Swiss company HUNI Deri Makinalari San. A.S. Thanks to their own designs, they also earned great appreciation in that sector. In 2025, when the Ultra Products concept gained far greater priority, they ended their 34-year collaboration with HUNI.
In 1997, after turning his dream of boat ownership into reality, Nejat Ovutmen met Atila Rezak. In 2000, during a conversation among a group of boat-owner friends, Rezak explained how he had solved the problems of round mooring lines by switching to flat mooring lines and also mentioned that he was not satisfied with the winding system he had at the time. One of the people in the conversation, Ugur Bey, who knew Boyut, suggested to Nejat Ovutmen that the company should build this system in stainless steel. The very next day, Nejat shared the idea with Yilmaz Yucel, and after a brief evaluation they decided to make the rope system.
Thanks to the company's engineering background and sailing experience, they worked intensely and in a very short time presented a working prototype of the product to Atila Rezak and several close boat-owner friends. When the design of the reel, first known as Quickline and now as ULTRALINE, was completed and received great appreciation from Atila Rezak and its earliest users, the product moved into production and marketing. Over time it drew strong interest from boats cruising the Mediterranean. Some used the line for stern anchors and others for taking lines ashore, and everyone appreciated its compact structure and smooth operation.
In a way, this development also started the process that would lead to the ULTRA Anchor.
Rezak, himself an architect and a very experienced sailor, worked closely with the ULTRA team and contributed to product development. Sadly, he passed away in 2011. One of the most painful aspects of that loss for Ovutmen and Yucel was that he could not witness even more of the great success ultimately achieved.
Today, more than half of the ULTRA Anchors, which are manufactured with American Bureau of Shipping "Superior Holding Power" certification, are exported abroad to Europe, the United States, Australia, the UAE, and many other markets.
Boyut Makina continues to improve its capabilities day by day and to keep its quality standards at the highest level. In addition to the ULTRA Anchor, the company also continues to manufacture the ULTRA Bow-Pocket Anchor, ULTRA Swivel, Ultraline Flat Reel Rope, ULTRA Bow Roller, ULTRA Snubber Hook, and other anchoring and mooring products with the same commitment to quality.
When Randy Boelsems, founder of Quickline US and the company's U.S. dealer since 2005, decided to retire at the beginning of 2016, Boyut Makina purchased his company and renamed it Ultra Products West. In doing so, the Ultra Products concept expanded to include direct marketing operations in the United States.
Today, while Yucel and Ovutmen continue their work as company directors, Yucel's elder son Erkutay Yucel manages domestic and international sales, especially in the United States, and his brother Erkay Yucel leads the entire production organization. In 2022, Ovutmen's daughter Isil Ovutmen Lamberti and her husband Pietro Lamberti joined the company to support general product development processes.
